Year Two Intermediate Diploma 

 

This intermediate year builds on the introduction and welcomes creative health professionals to qualify as Therapeutic Wellbeing Practitioners.  ​The title of the qualification is determined by the placement as some students will practice as therapeutic counsellors, whilst others may be therapeutic mentors, key workers, or creative group work practitioners.

The curriculum enables essential understanding of multi-disciplinary and inter-agency working to support effective risk assessment, safeguarding, and child protection practice.  ​This year enables mental health leadership, and creative approaches to community wellbeing. 

​This course is delivered over 12 weekends once a month for the duration of a year. 

There are eight journal entries, and four practical assessments included in the intermediate year.

Module 5: Multi-Disciplinary Perspectives

This module explores biopsychosocial perspectives, including multi-factorial influences on adult, child, and community mental health and wellbeing. This includes awareness of physical, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual domains of development across the lifespan. The emphasis is on the interface between a range of multidisciplinary approaches, with awareness of the development of identity, inter-generational trauma, cultural heritage, life histories, migration stories, racial, cultural and social influences on the development of self in context.  This includes the impacts of social inequality, discrimination and trauma in identifying and assessing adult and child needs.  Students learn to reflect in dialogue with clients, parents, carers, and other professionals to enhance choices, considering risks, signposting, safeguarding and working within limits of competence. This includes making appropriate referrals in interdisciplinary and multi-agency practice, as well as responsibilities and accountability for in working within legal, policy and ethical frameworks.

Module 6: Creativity, Human Potential and Wellbeing

This module strengthens and develops the necessary skills and competencies required for creative and relational approaches to therapeutic counselling with adults, children and young people. This supports students in placements who are delivering therapeutic counselling with different ages and stages of life to reflect on the integration of theory and practice. This also supports students who may be working with clients delivering, therapeutic key working, mentoring and creative groupwork. It enables preparation for professional case presentations, including principles and values for therapeutic counselling, relational and ethical practice, assessment, collaborative formulation, risk assessment and safeguarding. This explores neurodiversity, SEND, mental health and emotional wellbeing. This includes unconscious process and ‘out of awareness’ communications, non-verbal communication, therapy in education, awareness of attachment and emotional regulation in the classroom.

Module 7: Research and Evaluation 

This module supports students to engage with research-informed perspectives and evidence-based practice, through critical investigation of a range of approaches to research and research methodologies for work with adults, teenagers and children. This includes increasing awareness and understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods, critical enquiry and analysis into the potential and limits of outcome measurement tools, infant and child observation studies, narrative and autoethnographic research, pragmatic approaches to case study, the use of self, relational ethics, reflexivity and self-enquiry, including play and arts-based approaches to researching children’s lived experience, their participatory voices and the languages of the child. This also supports students to consider the process of practitioner research, including engaging in research forums to consider research proposals, the risks and benefits of research, research ethics, consent and developing a working alliance for research, use of supervision in writing a case study application, which is relevant in year three of training.

Module 8: Creative Approaches to Community Wellbeing

This module enables students to facilitate a community wellbeing project, promoting mental health, emotional wellbeing, cultural, systemic and organisational change in the interests of adults, children and young people. Students are required to work collaboratively to provide support for groups and communities to develop a project, which can include care for the carers. Students co-produce aims and outcomes, applying the learning through action-research.  Students engage with mental health leadership through practice-based learning, initiating, and evolving professional community-based wellbeing projects in diverse settings. This includes facilitating creativity and human potential through creative group work, culminating in project presentations, which can demonstrate professional quality and standards, innovation, safe and effective project management, as well as evaluating outcomes.

On completion of the second year students are evaluated for the professional qualifying route as therapeutic counsellors.  Having established a firm foundation in professional principles, inter-disciplinary practice, creativity, human potential and community wellbeing, students are well equipped to apply their knowledge and skills in the consulting room.

Successful completion of the first two years of training enables student progression to therapeutic placements to further integrate their learning experience and promote quality and standards.
